Four Key Attributes of Good a Leader

A good leader is a person who influences others towards the achievement of a mutually beneficial common goal. In order to influence others towards the attainment of a clearly articulated goal, there are four key attributes that good leaders need to have. It is interesting to realise that these attributes are not a “rocket science” but are as a  result of consistent nurturing. The importance of these attributes is to ensure that the written vision and mission statements are translated into realistic outputs, outcomes and ultimately generational impact.

 

The four key attributes of a good leader

 

1. Vision

A good leader has the ability to foresee the future or the ability to see the invisible. Good leaders have the ability to touch the intangible. Good leaders function as visionaries. As a visionary, good leaders are able to meticulously articulate a distinct and authentic vision to the followers. A vision is what encompasses the core and the heart of every organization, business and government.

 

 2. Integrity

Integrity is an undeniable agreement between what is said and done. The disjuncture between the two is a clear indication of the lack of integrity. Integrity it is not only about talking but a matter of actions. A good leader understands that upholding consistent character and behaviour in public and private dealings is of utmost importance for gaining respect and trust from the followers. It takes a conscious and radical choice to deny anything that has the potential of destroying your hard earned reputation. A good leader with integrity walks the talk.

 

 3. Strategic Thinker

A good leader needs to have the mental tenacity and a very sharp strategic thinking capacity. Strategic thinking is defined as a broader and more innovative way of thinking on a daily basis about the overall goals of an organization. It is proactive, not a reactive approach and focuses on creating a better future and adding value. It always involves change with regards to imagining the results that can be achieved in the future.  Good leaders keep themselves on the cutting edge of leadership through reading, studying and researching new trends and patterns in the sectors of their interest. It is through strategic thinking that a good leader will always be able to inspire hope by providing strategic direction and creating strategic partnership with relevant stakeholders.

 

 4. Assertive

Assertiveness is the ability to clearly state what one expects so that there will be no misunderstanding. In most cases people confuse being assertive with being aggressive. Assertiveness does not instill fear in the followers but inspires a clear action. A good leader must be assertive and treat all the role players with equity and fairness.

 

Conclusion

The above mentioned attributes are not the only ones that good leaders need to develop but they form part of the fundamental and foundational leadership attributes.. These attributes are not difficult but can be attained through commitment and dedication.  These  are the key the attributes that good leaders need to develop  and maintain.
